The sun is barely risen as I throw on the backpack and whistle for the dogs. We have elderberries to harvest! Wildcrafting elderberries in the Appalachian Mountains is a late summer tradition. I spend my days in a state of pure joy, foraging for berries while bathed in the beauty of gorgeous vistas, rain clouds, mountain mist and the feeling of accomplishment at the end of nine strenuous miles.
